Walter the Producer knows how to make an entrance. On his latest EP Modern Rock, which dropped June 6th, the Brooklyn-based artist invites us into a six-track journey that’s part psych-rock, part disco-pop, part western-noir—all anchored by a confident sense of self and story.
The title track, “Modern Rock,” kicks things off with swirling psychedelic guitar and layered vocals that beg for a closer listen. The drums drive the song forward, adding momentum to lyrics that speak to being “filled with ambition” but not knowing where to put it. There’s a touch of Arctic Monkeys in the delivery, but Walter makes it his own—offering a sharp, re-playable opener that hints at what’s to come.
“I’d Know” follows, switching up the energy with an optimistic groove and one of the more romantic lyrical perspectives on the project. The intro feels fresh, and the song itself plays like an ode to a future love—hopeful, catchy, and subtly infectious. It’s a track that adds lightness without losing depth, and proves Walter isn’t afraid to change pace.

Then we hit “Bad Bad Man,” where Walter fully leans into western flair. The twang is loud and proud, paired with a galloping drumbeat that conjures up scenes of desert chases and heartbreak showdowns. The storytelling is vivid: losing a lover, chasing down the guy who took her, and doing it all with cinematic flair. It's playful and pulpy, but grounded by intentional production and vocal clarity.
“Tell Me Again” marks a tonal shift. The lyrics land heavy, reflecting on grief, denial, and the disorientation that follows loss. The piano is soft but purposeful, while electric guitar adds tension without overpowering the emotional weight of the song. It’s a beautiful balance between acoustic and electric elements, and one of the most lyrically potent moments on the EP.
“Little Lies” feels like a natural continuation—almost the emotional aftermath of “Tell Me Again.” There’s a sense of unraveling here, like the mask is slipping. Walter leans into raw vulnerability, singing about the toll of pretending and the desire to just be honest. The track feels intimate, personal, and deeply human.
The closer, “Lonely Cowboy,” ties the western thread together with a darker, more resolute tone. Where “Bad Bad Man” was full of chase and bravado, this final track feels more isolated, more desperate. He returns alone, more broken, and perhaps more willing to embrace the wrong path to get what he wants. There’s a bittersweet defiance in the line, “I’ma get my baby back home,” and the arrangement reflects that tension beautifully.

With Modern Rock, Walter the Producer delivers a cohesive, emotionally rich collection that blurs genre lines without losing focus. It’s an EP that balances groove with grit, and charm with chaos. Whether he’s riding high on disco-funk or spiraling through heartbreak, there’s intention in every sound and story.
